Around 1320, some spinners, weavers and dyers (more or less 300) left their city because the Seigniory of Lucca had passed into the hands of the faction of the Ghibellines, while they were Guelphs. It had a velvety surface just like its descendant, but it was heavier and used for the clothes of kings, holy vestments and to wrap the mortal remains of the Saints.<br \/>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.48&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_3&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.47&#8243; parallax=&#8221;off&#8221; parallax_method=&#8221;on&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.87&#8243; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>#5 What\u2019s the difference between a brocade and a lampas?<\/h2>\n<p>Brocade and lampas are 2 other luxury fabrics and, at a first sight, very similar to one another: their designs are complex and brightly coloured and they\u2019re heavier than other fabrics. To create their patterns, one needs more than one weft, and therefore countless threads.<\/p>\n<p>So how can you distinguish one from the other?<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll just need to turn them round: on the <strong>wrong side<\/strong> of a lampas you\u2019ll see threads everywhere, whereas on a brocade the threads are visible only behind the pattern. You can find them in this post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And what about damasks?<\/p>\n<h2>#6 What\u2019s the main feature of damasks?<\/h2>\n<p>Brightness and lightness: these are the features that can help you recognise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luigi-bevilacqua.com\/en\/lightness-damask-fabrics\/\">damasks<\/a>, which owe their name to the<strong> city of Damask<\/strong>. And Venice and Genoa probably began importing them from this very Syrian city.<\/p>\n<p>But their wrong side can help you identify these silk fabrics, too: indeed, on the right side the design is bright and the ground is dull. Which, in 1806, made weaving simpler and much faster.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph-Marie Jacquard\u2019s machine, indeed, combines manual and automatic work:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>it employs a series of punched cards, tied to each other, whose holes correspond to the fabric\u2019s pattern;<\/li>\n<li>it only moves the necessary warp threads, following the holes on the punched cards, which move forward when the weaver pushes a pedal;<\/li>\n<li>only one person is needed to operate it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;http:\/\/www.luigi-bevilacqua.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Produzione-di-tessuti-Jacquard.jpg&#8221; show_in_lightbox=&#8221;on&#8221; use_overlay=&#8221;on&#8221; overlay_icon_color=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221; hover_overlay_color=&#8221;rgba(0,0,0,0.05)&#8221; hover_icon=&#8221;%%47%%&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.87&#8243; max_width=&#8221;89%&#8221; module_alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.87&#8243; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>#8 Who produced the golden threadS of the most precious Italian textile fabrics?<\/h2>\n<p>There was a team of specialised craftsmen in Venice who produced paper-thin gold and silver leaves: the <strong><em>battiloro <\/em><\/strong>(\u201cgoldbeaters\u201d). Their name derives from the fact that they beat precious metals with a hammer to make it thinner.<\/p>\n<p>Their creations decorated palaces, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luigi-bevilacqua.com\/en\/gondola-restoration-bevilacqua-fabrics\/\">ships<\/a>, furniture items and even fabrics: by cutting the gold leaves into threads, they could be used to embellish clothing and furnishing fabrics.<\/p>\n<h2>#9 Where does silk come from?<\/h2>\n<p>Finally, a kind of thread which is less precious than gold, but anyway of great value: silk. But why is it so valuable?
