In the descriptions of our fabrics, you will often find technical terms referring to specific processes: shin\u00e9, stri\u00e9, lam\u00e9, lanc\u00e9<\/em>, and craquel\u00e9<\/em>. These techniques have been developed to give our products unique characteristics. The purpose of this article is to clarify the meaning of these terms.<\/p>\n

Shin\u00e9 Velvets<\/h2>\n

Shin\u00e9<\/em> velvets are characterized by their irregular shades. This effect is achieved by using a yarn dyed with different shades of the same color. The weaving of this variable-colored yarn creates velvets with irregular coloration and distinctive shading that enriches the pile and adds three-dimensionality to the design.<\/p>\n

Our range of shin\u00e9<\/em> fabrics includes heddle velvets<\/em><\/a> in olive green and those in the velvets<\/em><\/a> category.<\/p>\n

It is important to note that the term “shin\u00e9<\/em>” is not always explicitly mentioned in fabric descriptions, as is the case with the other special processes discussed in this article.<\/p>\n

Stri\u00e9 Fabrics<\/h2>\n

Stri\u00e9<\/em> fabrics are characterized by the presence of regular stripes in different shades. These sharply defined vertical stripes are not the result of a single yarn dyed in several gradations, but of yarns of different colors. The precision of the stripes is the result of combining bobbins, some with darker yarns, and others with lighter yarns, each creating a specific color stripe along the entire length of the fabric.<\/p>\n

This technique gives the fabric more depth and richness than a plain fabric, which may appear simpler. Stripes can be created in the pile of velvets, as well as in the satin and taffeta backgrounds that are characteristic of satins, lampas, and damasks.<\/p>\n

Our range of stri\u00e9<\/em> fabrics includes all heddle velvets<\/a> except olive green velvets, which are shin\u00e9<\/em>, and satins, lampas, brocades, and damasks in several colors. In addition, most of our plain velvets are stri\u00e9<\/em> or shin\u00e9<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Lam\u00e9 Fabrics<\/h2>\n

The term lam\u00e9<\/em> refers to a fabric embellished with metallic threads. These may be threads or thin foils of precious metals, such as gold and silver, wrapped around silk thread, as found in cloth of gold<\/a>. Alternatively, metallic or Lurex yarns can be used to add brightness and preciousness to the fabrics.<\/p>\n

In our collection, examples of fabrics with metallic yarns are Broccato Lampas<\/a> and Bizar Lampas<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the context of handmade velvets, lam\u00e9<\/em> also takes on a lanc\u00e9<\/em> connotation. This is due to the weaver’s use of a complementary weft intended for the metallic yarn component of the design. An emblematic example is the Rinascimento soprarizzo velvet<\/a>, which has untied wefts, an effect that can be defined as lanc\u00e9<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Mosaico Lanc\u00e9 heddle velvet<\/a> has lanc\u00e9 wefts<\/em>, or additional wefts that contribute to the pattern. This is especially evident in the animals and other subjects that are characterized by a pattern that mimics mosaic tiles, made precisely from the thrown wefts.<\/p>\n

Craquel\u00e9 Fabrics<\/h2>\n

The term craquel\u00e9<\/em>, which is of French origin, can be translated into English as “cracking” or “textured.” Craquel\u00e9<\/em> fabrics do not have a smooth, uniform appearance, but rather a texture reminiscent of hammered leather.<\/p>\n

This technique gives silk fabrics a superior depth and three-dimensionality as light is reflected more richly, creating a subtle effect that distinguishes the fabric from a plain satin.<\/p>\n

This textural characteristic is the result of the weaving process, not the use of different colored yarns. In the past, a special tool was used to achieve this effect by pulling a weft thread to slightly curl the bottom of the fabric. Today, it is achieved with different techniques.<\/p>\n

I velluti shin\u00e9<\/em> si distinguono per le loro sfumature irregolari. Questo effetto \u00e8 ottenuto utilizzando un filo tinto con diverse gradazioni dello stesso colore. La tessitura di questo filato dal colore variabile produce velluti con una colorazione non uniforme e sfumature particolari, che arricchiscono il pelo e conferiscono tridimensionalit\u00e0 al disegno.<\/p>

Tessuti stri\u00e9<\/h2>
I tessuti stri\u00e9<\/em> si caratterizzano per la presenza di rigature regolari in tonalit\u00e0 diverse. Queste righe verticali, nitidamente definite, derivano non da un singolo filo tinto con gradazioni multiple, ma da fili di colori diversi. La precisione delle righe \u00e8 il risultato della combinazione di bobine, alcune con filati pi\u00f9 scuri, altre con filati pi\u00f9 chiari, ciascuna delle quali genera una riga di colore specifico lungo l\u2019intera lunghezza del tessuto.<\/p>
Questa tecnica conferisce al tessuto una profondit\u00e0 e una ricchezza superiori rispetto a un tessuto monocolore, che potrebbe apparire pi\u00f9 semplice. La striatura pu\u00f2 essere creata sia sul pelo del velluto che sul fondo raso e taffet\u00e0, caratteristica distintiva dei rasi, lampassi e damaschi.<\/p>

Tessuti lam\u00e9<\/h2>
Il termine lam\u00e9<\/em> si riferisce a un tessuto arricchito da filati metallici. Questi possono essere fili o sottili lamine di metalli preziosi come l\u2019oro e l\u2019argento, avvolti attorno al filo di seta, come si riscontra nei tessuti auroserici<\/a>. In alternativa, si possono utilizzare filati metallici o di Lurex, che donano luminosit\u00e0 e preziosit\u00e0 ai tessuti.<\/p>

Il termine craquel\u00e9<\/em>, di origine francese, pu\u00f2 essere tradotto in italiano come \u201ccrettatura\u201d o \u201cgoffratura\u201d. I tessuti craquel\u00e9<\/em> non presentano un aspetto liscio e uniforme, ma piuttosto una texture che evoca la pelle martellata.<\/p>
Questa tecnica conferisce ai tessuti di seta una profondit\u00e0 e una tridimensionalit\u00e0 superiori, poich\u00e9 la luce viene riflessa in modo pi\u00f9 ricco, creando un effetto di pregio che distingue il tessuto da un semplice raso liscio.<\/p>
Questa caratteristica materica \u00e8 il risultato della lavorazione in fase di tessitura e non dell\u2019uso di filati di colori diversi. Un tempo, si utilizzava uno strumento specifico per ottenerla, tirando un filo della trama per arricciare leggermente il fondo del tessuto. Oggi, si ottiene con tecniche diverse.<\/p>
