Here, four weavers intertwine threads and patterns with grace and precision, transforming daily labor into material poetry. <strong>Silvia, Ilaria, Carlotta, and Giulia<\/strong> guard an ancient knowledge, embodied in the <strong>18 original 18th-century looms<\/strong>, rescued in 1875 from the Silk School of the Serenissima.<\/p>\n<p>These instruments, patiently restored and cared for, become extensions of their hands: with delicacy and control, they guide every thread, creating velvets that breathe the history and craftsmanship of generations of artisans. Three of them lead us through their world, sharing experiences, secrets, and curiosities of a craft where every inch of fabric is unique and precious.<\/p>\n<h2>Handweaving Velvets on Old Looms: Challenges and Value<\/h2>\n<p>Every velvet is born from a slow, delicate ritual. Giulia tells us that simply setting up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luigi-bevilacqua.com\/en\/weaving-according-to-diderot-and-dalembert\/\">a hand-weaving loom<\/a> can take one to two months, <strong>up to six for the most complex creations<\/strong>. But the true magic demands even more time: behind every inch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luigi-bevilacqua.com\/en\/category\/fabrics\/\">fine fabric<\/a> is the hand of a human being, which some days is vigorous, weaving <strong>up to 40 cm in eight hours<\/strong>, other days slows down, giving life to a different rhythm.<\/p>\n<p>Precision is essential: the iron bars that shape the velvet pile must be carefully removed, and the special blade must cut with skill, a gesture that is both physical and poetic. The loom\u2019s pedals, pressed with force, create a dialogue between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luigi-bevilacqua.com\/en\/history-our-jacquard-looms\/\">the Jacquard machine<\/a>\u2019s punched cards, the warp, and the weft threads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of these operations can be done lightly,\u201d Giulia says. \u201cWe are not machines. Today, though accelerated to two years, the journey retains the same spirit. Two fundamental phases guide the apprenticeship: <strong>observing<\/strong> an experienced weaver and <strong>mastering<\/strong> the loom perfectly before weaving a single velvet thread on one\u2019s own.<\/p>\n<p>Silvia recalls:<br \/>\u201cI studied at the Art Institute of Textile, and it was there that I discovered Tessitura Bevilacqua. After finishing my studies, I sent my resume and was lucky: at that moment, they needed new weavers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Ilaria emphasizes that the beginning is only a first step:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you arrive here, you need new training, both theoretical and practical. At school, there are no looms like these, so you learn gradually. Only by observing them for years do you understand the passing of threads, the knots, and how to intervene when something breaks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The most experienced weavers <strong>pass on their knowledge<\/strong> to the next generation, perpetuating an ancient cycle of mastery. Silvia and her colleagues learned from artisans now retired and will do the same with those who follow in their footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>Daily experience also teaches <strong>the importance of humidity<\/strong>: when the air is too dry, the threads on the bobbins do not weave correctly. They can break easily, and only the trained ear of a weaver can perceive the sign of a problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cListening to the loom is essential,\u201d Giulia explains. \u201cThere is no music in the room: the loom\u2019s sound must be clear, recognizable. Any unusual noise requires immediate intervention, to avoid ruining the fabric.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weaving is a sensory art: sight alone is not enough. Sono le artigiane che custodiscono il know-how per realizzare i nostri tessuti sui 18 telai originali del Settecento, che abbiamo recuperato nel 1875 dalla Scuola della Seta della Serenissima. I loro nomi sono Silvia, Ilaria, Carlotta, Giulia, Giulia e Gloria. Tre di loro raccontano la loro esperienza e le curiosit\u00e0 sul mondo dei velluti fatti a mano.<\/p><h2>Produzione di velluti a mano: le difficolt\u00e0 e il valore<\/h2><p>Le particolarit\u00e0 del lavorare con un <a href=\"http:\/\/www.luigi-bevilacqua.com\/la-tessitura-secondo-diderot-e-dalembert\/\">telaio artigianale per tessitura<\/a>, spiega Gloria, si riscontrano gi\u00e0 durante il suo allestimento. Questa fase, infatti, richiede molto tempo: in media da uno a due mesi, ma pu\u00f2 arrivare fino a sei mesi per i velluti pi\u00f9 complessi.<\/p><p>Inoltre, la tessitura artigianale ha bisogno di tempi molto lunghi anche per la produzione. Dietro questi<a href=\"http:\/\/www.luigi-bevilacqua.com\/categoria\/tessuti\/\"> tessuti pregiati<\/a>, ma anche unici, c\u2019\u00e8 la mano di un essere umano: certi giorni \u00e8 pi\u00f9 forte, e allora riesce ad arrivare magari a 40 cm di tessuto, in 8 ore. In altri giorni ha meno forza, e quindi i centimetri prodotti saranno inferiori. \u00c8 necessaria anche molta precisione, per sfilare le barre di ferro che creano il pelo del velluto e tagliare il pelo del tessuto con l\u2019apposita lama. Si tratta di un lavoro fisico che richiede una certa forza per premere i pedali del telaio e far cos\u00ec muovere le schede forate nella <a href=\"http:\/\/www.luigi-bevilacqua.com\/storia-del-telaio-jacquard\/\">macchina Jacquard<\/a> e i fili di trama e ordito.<\/p><p>\u201cNessuna di queste \u00e8 un\u2019operazione che puoi fare con leggerezza\u201d, racconta Gloria. \u201cPer quanta attenzione ci mettiamo, non siamo delle macchine e sui tessuti possono risultare piccole imperfezioni. Oggi la formazione \u00e8 rimasta la stessa, anche se un po' pi\u00f9 concentrata, riducendola a due anni, e si basa ancora su due fasi fondamentali: osservare una tessitrice esperta e capire alla perfezione il telaio prima di cominciare a tessere un velluto. Solo dopo questo periodo una tessitrice pu\u00f2 cominciare a lavorare da sola ad un velluto.<\/p><p>\u201cHo studiato all\u2019Istituto d\u2019arte del tessuto, ed \u00e8 proprio qui che ho sentito parlare della Tessitura Bevilacqua. Perci\u00f2, finiti gli studi, ho inviato il curriculum e ho avuto un colpo di fortuna, perch\u00e9 in quel momento avevano bisogno di nuove tessitrici\u201d, racconta Silvia.<\/p><p>Questo \u00e8 per\u00f2 solo l\u2019inizio, dice Ilaria: \u201cquando arrivi qui, hai bisogno di una nuova formazione teorica e pratica. A scuola, ovviamente, questi telai non ci sono, quindi il mestiere lo impari qui, gradualmente. Solo osservandolo per anni \u00e8 possibile capire come \u00e8 fatto il telaio, come vi passano attraverso i fili, come aggiustarli quando si rompono e quali sono i vari tipi di nodo\u201d.<\/p><p>A formare le nuove tessitrici della Bevilacqua sono le artigiane pi\u00f9 anziane: Silvia e le altre 5 che oggi lavorano qui l\u2019hanno ricevuta da quelle che ora sono in pensione. \u201cE anche noi faremo lo stesso: trasmetteremo il sapere a chi arriver\u00e0 nei prossimi anni\u201d.<\/p><p>Grazie a questa formazione e all\u2019esperienza quotidiana possono scoprire, ad esempio, il valore dell\u2019umidit\u00e0: se l\u2019ambiente \u00e8 troppo secco manca l\u2019attrito che mantiene i fili attorcigliati sulle bobine. Quando succede sono le tessitrici che devono individuare dov\u2019\u00e8 il problema. Ma come riescono ad accorgersi se qualcosa non va? \u201cAscoltando il telaio.
