But which balls? The ones popping up everywhere in Florence, on fa\u00e7ades, vaults and lintels of villas, public buildings and churches. They\u2019re the crest of the family that ruled first Florence and then the Grand Duchy of Tuscany from 1434 to 1737: the <strong>de\u2019 Medici<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_3&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.69&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221; text_orientation=&#8221;left&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3>The balls on the coat of arms of the Medici<\/h3>\n<p>There are many theories about the origin of the balls on the coat of arms of the Medici family. From the oranges hinting at the Medici\u2019s trades with the East to the <strong>pills<\/strong> that would explain the name of the family (<em>medici <\/em>means \u201cdoctors\u201d in Italian), since pills were round and red, during the Middle Ages.<\/p>\n<p>According to the best grounded hypothesis, the Medici would have drawn their inspiration for the blazon from the crest of the <em>Arte del Cambio <\/em>(\u201c<a title=\"Guilds of Florence \" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guilds_of_Florence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guild<\/a> of Change\u201d) and from the job to which they owed their ascent to power, that of <strong>bankers<\/strong>: its \u201cballs\u201d &#8211; as Florentines called them &#8211; are placed on a gold field and are six, five red and one blue and containing three golden lilies.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_3&#8243;][et_pb_image _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.69&#8243; src=&#8221;http:\/\/www.luigi-bevilacqua.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Coats-of-arms-Medici-513&#215;672-229&#215;300.jpg&#8221; show_in_lightbox=&#8221;on&#8221; url_new_window=&#8221;off&#8221; use_overlay=&#8221;on&#8221; overlay_icon_color=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221; hover_overlay_color=&#8221;rgba(0,0,0,0.07)&#8221; hover_icon=&#8221;%%51%%&#8221; sticky=&#8221;off&#8221; align=&#8221;center&#8221; always_center_on_mobile=&#8221;on&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221; force_fullwidth=&#8221;off&#8221; \/][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.69&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221; text_orientation=&#8221;left&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>But since similar \u201cballs\u201d can be seen on the coats of arms of <strong>other noble families <\/strong>of Tuscany, they have been described as the studs fixing straps to shields, too, which would later develop into part of the crest.<\/p>\n<p>As in any other noble family, though, there\u2019s a mythical theory on the Medici\u2019s coat of arms, too. According to it, the balls are the dents left by the hammer of the giant Mugello on <strong>Averardo de\u2019 Medici\u2019s <\/strong>shield. Ma che palle? Quelle che, a Firenze, spuntano ovunque, su facciate, volte e architravi di ville, edifici pubblici e chiese. Sono lo stemma della famiglia che, dal 1434 al 1737, govern\u00f2 Firenze, prima, e il Granducato di Toscana, poi: i <strong>Medici<\/strong>.<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Le palle dello stemma dei Medici<\/h3><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Sull\u2019origine delle palle sullo stemma dei Medici esistono varie ipotesi. Dalle arance che alluderebbero ai commerci dei Medici con l\u2019Oriente alle <strong>pillole <\/strong>che spiegherebbero il nome della famiglia: le pillole medicinali, infatti, erano tonde e rosse, nel Medioevo.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Secondo la teoria meglio documentata, i Medici avrebbero tratto ispirazione per il loro blasone dallo stemma dell\u2019Arte del Cambio e dall\u2019attivit\u00e0 che ne aveva permesso l\u2019ascesa, quella di <strong>banchieri<\/strong>. L\u2019<a title=\"Arte del Cambio \" href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arte_del_Cambio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arte del Cambio<\/a> aveva, infatti, come stemma uno scudo rosso con vari fiorini dorati. I bisanti sul blasone dei Medici, dunque, sarebbero delle monete, con colori invertiti, rispetto all\u2019Arte del Cambio: le \u201cpalle\u201d - come le chiamarono i fiorentini - si trovano in campo dorato e sono sei, cinque rosse e una blu, quest\u2019ultima contenente tre gigli dorati.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ma il fatto che \u201cpalle\u201d simili compaiano in blasoni anche di <strong>altre famiglie aristocratiche<\/strong> di Toscana ha fatto ipotizzare che si tratti delle borchie con le quali l\u2019imbracciatura veniva fissata allo scudo, e che sarebbero passate sugli stemmi dei casati.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ma, come per ogni famiglia nobile che si rispetti, c\u2019\u00e8 anche un\u2019ipotesi leggendaria sullo stemma dei Medici.
