But there are other elements characterising this furnishing velvet: let\u2019s see which they are, starting with one of the places where you can find it, the church of Sant\u2019Alvise in Venice.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">The church of Sant\u2019Alvise<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Some places in Venice are hard to spot, but this doesn\u2019t mean they are less charming: this is true of Sant\u2019Alvise, too. Which, in fact, is dedicated to <a title=\"Saint Louis of Toulouse\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_of_Toulouse%20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saint Louis of Toulouse<\/a>. In Venice he\u2019s better known as Alvise, though.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_512\" style=\"width: 484px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-512\" class=\"wp-image-512 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.luigi-bevilacqua.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Chiesa-SantAlvise-1024x7511.jpg\" alt=\"Sant'Alvise church Venice | Tessitura Bevilacqua\" width=\"474\" height=\"347\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-512\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The church of Sant&#8217;Alvise<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The <a title=\"Sant'Alvise church\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chorusvenezia.org\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=24&amp;Itemid=17&amp;lang=en%20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">church<\/a> is just two minutes away from the waterbus stop bearing the same name, but this is a rather little known area of the sestiere of Cannaregio. Antonia Venier decided to build it in 1383, after the Saint had appeared to her in a dream.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Thanks to this backer, a church with a single nave was constructed in five years, then modified in the 17th century, where today one can see three masterpieces by Giambattista Tiepolo: <em>Christ Reaching the Calvary, <\/em>the <em>Coronation of Thorns,<\/em> and the <em>Flagellation.<\/em> And, during the most important celebrations, Bevilacqua\u2019s Italian soprarizzo velvet.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Flowers on furnishing velvets: an interpretation<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_511\" style=\"width: 206px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-511\" class=\"wp-image-511 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.luigi-bevilacqua.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Velluto-SantAlvise-3416-458x700-196x3001.jpg\" alt=\"Soprarizzo velvet 3416 | Tessitura Bevilacqua\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-511\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Sant&#8217;Alvise velvet<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The vase embroidered on the gilded yellow ground of this fabric, resembling 18th-century French furnishing velvets, is surrounded by peonies and hazel twigs. But why does the pattern show these flowers, rather than others?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This has doubtless something to do with their elegance, but each flowers conceals a symbol. <strong>Sunflowers<\/strong> stand for devotion: it\u2019s exactly this flower that the nymph Clytie turns into, one of Helios\u2019s lovers. Out of jealousy, the nymph causes the death of Leucothea. Helios, though, is disgusted by Clytie\u2019s behaviour and abandons her: Clytie will henceforth spend their days following the Sun\u2019s chart with her eyes, and ultimately turn into a sunflower.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Peonies<\/strong>, on the other hand, are often used as a symbol of the Virgin: as beautiful as roses, indeed, they have no thorns.
