A precious fabric with splendid decorations, full of light and colors: the lampas has fascinated for centuries due to its richness and exclusivity and even today is one of the most appreciated fabrics for furnishings and decoration.<\/p>\n
Lampas is a figured silk fabric, meaning that its patterns and decorations are not printed but woven into the fabric itself, just like damasks and brocades. Its complex textile typology requires two warp systems (the threads placed in the longitudinal direction of the cloth), one for the ground and one for the binding, and at least two series of wefts (threads woven crosswise to the warp). The weave of the lampas, i.e. the way the threads of the fabric are woven, is usually satin or taffeta, which makes the fabric less heavy.<\/p>\n
The pattern is achieved by special techniques of weft interlacing. It can be an \u201cuntied\u201d weft, in which a ground weft passes over several successive warp threads to create the pattern (lisi\u00e9r\u00e9 <\/em>lampas). Or one or more additional wefts are used in addition to the ground weft. In this way, we can have \u201clanc\u00e9\u201d wefts of different colors, which are inserted into the ground construction along the entire length of the fabric, appearing on the front only in the parts that form the pattern. On the back, they remain free and appear to the eye as a series of loose threads. These wefts contribute to the strength of the fabric. The possibilities for decorations are endless, as they have followed the changes in style and fashion over the centuries. In our collection of lampas fabrics<\/a>, we have selected original Renaissance motifs, such as the Melograno lampas<\/a>, Baroque motifs, such as the Giardinetto lampas<\/a>, Byzarre motifs, i.e. the Paesaggio lampas<\/a>, and Art Nouveau motifs, such as the Three Crowns lampas<\/a>, designed by the Swedish artist Maja Sj\u00f6strom. Among the most recent additions to the collection are the Persiano lampas and the Zebra lampas.<\/p>\n The decorative motif of the Persiano silk lampas<\/a> shows exotic vegetation with thin shoots in a seemingly random progression with thin curling tendrils, feathery leaves, bell-shaped flowers of various sizes, and buds surrounding human figures wearing oriental clothing that blends in with the plant elements, especially the turban that echoes the flower corollas. The pattern has a vertical serpentine course and is characterized by great dynamism and rhythmic elegance, softened by the thin lines of the figures depicted. one side of the fabric to the other, appearing only in the areas of the design), in brocades the decoration is obtained with additional wefts inserted with special tools called \u201cspolette\u201d (shuttles<\/em>) only in the areas where they are needed for the design, therefore they are discontinuous wefts. Initially, they were woven on huge and complicated hand looms and their production was regulated and protected by strict laws<\/a>. It was in the 12th century that Venice began its production of fine silk fabrics, which also benefited from the knowledge and artifacts brought back at the end of the 13th century by the Venetian family Polo, in particular by Marco, after his long stay in China.<\/p>\n Lampas, known and produced in Venice since the Middle Ages, had its period of maximum splendor in the 1500s and 1600s. In the second half of the 16th century, it was used mainly for the clothing of the wealthier classes because of its prestige and value.<\/p>\n In particular, the brocaded lampas was called “Ganzo” in the Serenissima. In the late 1600s and early 1700s, it was the most precious and sought after fabric that supported the Venetian economy. La sua complessa tipologia tessile richiede due sistemi di ordito (i fili posti nel senso della lunghezza della pezza), uno di fondo e uno di legatura, e almeno due serie di trame (fili nel senso della larghezza della stoffa). L\u2019armatura del lampasso, ossia il modo in cui si intrecciano i fili del tessuto, \u00e8 solitamente raso o taffet\u00e0, che rendono la stoffa meno pesante.<\/p> Il disegno viene ottenuto grazie a tecniche particolari di intreccio della trama. Pu\u00f2 essere una trama \u201cslegata\u201d, in cui una trama di fondo passa sopra a pi\u00f9 fili consecutivi dell\u2019ordito creando il disegno (effetto lisi\u00e9r\u00e9). Oppure si utilizzano una o pi\u00f9 trame supplementari a quella del fondo. Possiamo avere cos\u00ec trame \u201clanciate\u201d di vari colori che si inseriscono nella costruzione del fondo per tutta la lunghezza della stoffa ed emergono sul dritto solo nelle parti che formano il disegno mentre sul retro rimangono libere e alla vista appaiono come una serie di fili sciolti. Il fondo del broccato, inoltre, pu\u00f2 essere semplice come per il lampasso (raso o taffet\u00e0), ma anche operato come lampasso, broccatello e velluto, arricchendo cos\u00ec il decoro gi\u00e0 esistente.\u00a0<\/p> \u00a0<\/p> I primi lampassi veneziani erano ispirati dalle sontuose sete che la Serenissima importava dall\u2019Oriente con altre merci di lusso e che poi esportava sui mercati occidentali. Inizialmente erano realizzati su immensi e complicati telai manuali e la loro produzione era regolamentata e protetta da una legislazione attenta<\/a>. Siamo nel XII secolo, quando Venezia comincia la sua produzione di stoffe di seta pregiate, che si avvarr\u00e0 anche delle conoscenze e dei manufatti portati in patria a fine \u2018200 dalla famiglia Polo, in particolare da Marco, dopo il lungo soggiorno in Cina.<\/p> Il lampasso, conosciuto e prodotto a Venezia fin dal medioevo, ebbe per\u00f2 il suo periodo di massimo splendore nel \u2018500 e \u2018600. Nella seconda met\u00e0 del \u2018500, si impose soprattutto per gli abiti delle classi pi\u00f9 facoltose, dati il loro pregio e valore.<\/p> In particolare, il lampasso broccato veniva chiamato \u201cGanzo\u201d nella Serenissima. Si tratta del tessuto pi\u00f9 prezioso e pi\u00f9 richiesto tra fine \u2018600 e inizi del \u2018700 che sosteneva l\u2019economia veneziana.
