Sometimes it is not easy to determine the origins of the patterns that adorn fabrics, but in some cases, we can be absolutely certain. Grotesque decorations<\/strong> are one such example. They featured prominently in Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical fabrics, but their history goes much further back in time, to the era of the Roman Empire.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text admin_label=”The Origin of Grotesque Decorations” _builder_version=”4.27.9″ module_alignment=”left” border_style=”solid” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n In 1480, a young man accidentally fell into a fissure in the ground on Oppian Hill in Rome<\/strong>. He found himself inside a space that looked like a cave and discovered walls decorated with unusual, colorful figures<\/strong>: monsters, chimeras, and sphinxes.<\/p>\n These designs sparked great enthusiasm among the artists of the time, who flocked to admire them and were deeply fascinated by what they saw. They had themselves lowered into the underground chambers to observe these wonders and study their compositional elements, with the aim of incorporating them into their own work. They all referred to these decorations as \u201cgrotesques,\u201d after the place where they had been discovered, which was thought to be a cave.<\/p>\n In fact, the paintings were found in rooms belonging to Nero\u2019s Domus Aurea<\/a>, which had remained buried and forgotten for centuries. Their defining features included vivid colors, slender forms, fantastical figures, and natural elements<\/strong> such as garlands, arranged against a solid-colored, often white, background. The composition was organized with perfect symmetry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The style spread from Rome to Florence, Bologna, and Siena, and later reached France, Spain, and England. Among the artists who contributed to its popularity were Pinturicchio, Botticelli, Filippino Lippi<\/strong>, and, above all, Raphael<\/strong> and his workshop.<\/p>\n Their work evolved over time, moving beyond the original motifs to include new interpretations of the classical grotesque<\/strong>, enriched with elements inspired primarily by the animal and plant kingdoms.<\/p>\n The distinctive quality of grotesques lay not only in their decorative richness, but also in the freedom with which elements from different realms were combined and transformed into a harmonious, unified composition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Grotesques also began to appear beyond vaulted ceilings and walls, embellishing furniture, decorative objects, architectural fittings, and furnishing fabrics<\/strong>, including tapestries, curtains, and upholstery.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text admin_label=”From Frescoes to Baroque Patterns for Fabrics” _builder_version=”4.27.9″ module_alignment=”left” border_style=”solid” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n From the Baroque and Neoclassical periods through the Victorian era, grotesque decorations remained popular until the 19th century, adapting to the aesthetic principles of successive artistic movements.<\/p>\n Our Grottesche<\/em> motif, inspired by this decorative tradition, dates back to the late 19th century<\/strong>, when combining different styles<\/strong> was particularly fashionable. The design brings together elements from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries.<\/p>\n The sphinxes<\/strong>, winged women, and head positioned between the winged figures date to the 16th century<\/strong>. Above the head is a shell-shaped ornament characteristic of the Rocaille style<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The canopy <\/strong>above the Rocaille ornament and the brackets<\/strong> supporting the sphinxes, on the other hand, are Baroque in style<\/strong>. Their scrollwork, curved lines, and elaborate structures recall Baroque architecture.<\/p>\n Rococo influences<\/strong> are also evident in the naturalistic elements<\/strong>, including the lavish floral arrangement in the bowl and the garlands.<\/p>\n We have chosen this motif for several of our fabrics: soprarizzo velvet<\/a>, multicolored velvet<\/a>, damask<\/a>, and brocatelle<\/a>.<\/p>\n In our Grottesche<\/em> soprarizzo velvet<\/a>, the extraordinary richness of shapes and details is achieved on a hand-operated loom<\/strong>. This is the most complex and precious of our velvets<\/strong>, and its intricate construction presented us with a challenge: creating an equally prestigious fabric featuring a similar motif, intended border_style=\"solid\"]<\/p> Non \u00e8 sempre facile stabilire la provenienza dei disegni che decorano i tessuti, ma per alcuni ne possiamo essere assolutamente certi e le decorazioni \u201ca grottesche\u201d sono proprio uno di questi casi. Hanno caratterizzato tessuti barocchi, rococ\u00f2 e neoclassici, ma la loro storia inizia molto tempo prima, pi\u00f9 precisamente all\u2019epoca dell\u2019Impero Romano.<\/p> [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=\"1_2,1_2\" _builder_version=\"3.25\" background_size=\"initial\" background_position=\"top_left\" background_repeat=\"repeat\"][et_pb_column type=\"1_2\" _builder_version=\"3.25\" custom_padding=\"|||\" custom_padding__hover=\"|||\"][et_pb_text admin_label=\"L\u2019origine delle decorazioni a grottesche\" _builder_version=\"4.6.4\" module_alignment=\"left\" border_style=\"solid\"]<\/p> Nel 1480 un giovane cadde accidentalmente in una fenditura del terreno sul colle Esquilino, a Roma. Si ritrov\u00f2 all\u2019interno di una grotta e si accorse che le pareti erano decorate con insolite figure variopinte come mostri, chimere e sfingi.<\/p> Questi disegni destarono grande entusiasmo tra gli artisti romani che accorsero ad ammirarli e ne rimasero affascinati. Si facevano calare nella grotta per osservare queste meraviglie, studiarne gli elementi compositivi per poi riproporli nelle loro opere. Ed il nome \u201cgrottesche\u201d deriva proprio dal luogo in cui furono trovati: una grotta.<\/p> In realt\u00e0, quelle non erano grotte ma i resti sotterranei della Domus Aurea di Nerone<\/a>. In linea con la tendenza rinascimentale di riproporre stilemi decorativi ispirati all'antichit\u00e0 classica, le grottesche divennero molto popolari negli ambienti colti e vennero riprodotte nei palazzi rinascimentali di nobili e papi. Caratteristici i colori accesi, le forme esili, le figure fantastiche, gli elementi naturali come le ghirlande e uno sfondo in tinta unita, spesso bianco. Il tutto disposto in perfetta simmetria.<\/p> Si diffusero da Roma a Firenze, Bologna, Siena e pi\u00f9 tardi in Francia, Spagna e Inghilterra. Tra gli artisti dell\u2019epoca che contribuirono alla loro affermazione ricordiamo il Pinturicchio, Botticelli, Filippino Lippi e, soprattutto, Raffaello e la sua bottega.<\/p> Le loro opere si trasformarono dando spazio anche ad interpretazioni dei soggetti classici delle grottesche, inserendo nuovi elementi ispirati soprattutto al mondo animale e vegetale. Inoltre, cominciarono ad utilizzarle non pi\u00f9 solo per dipinti di volte e pareti, ma anche per impreziosire mobili, suppellettili, infissi e tessuti per arredamento: arazzi, tendaggi e tappezzerie.<\/p> [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=\"1_2,1_2\" _builder_version=\"3.25\" background_size=\"initial\" background_position=\"top_left\" background_repeat=\"repeat\"][et_pb_column type=\"1_2\" _builder_version=\"3.25\" custom_padding=\"|||\" custom_padding__hover=\"|||\"][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Dagli affreschi ai motivi in stile barocco per tessuti\" _builder_version=\"4.6.5\" module_alignment=\"left\" hover_enabled=\"0\" border_style=\"solid\" sticky_enabled=\"0\"]<\/p> Dallo stile barocco a quello neoclassico, fino all\u2019epoca vittoriana: le decorazioni a grottesche rimasero popolari fino all\u2019Ottocento, seguendo per\u00f2 i canoni delle diverse correnti artistiche.<\/p> Il nostro motivo \u201cGrottesche\u201d, che riprende questo tema, risale alla fine dell\u2019Ottocento, epoca in cui erano molto in voga le combinazioni di stili diversi. Riproduce infatti elementi del XVI, XVII e XVIII secolo.<\/p> Cinquecentesche sono le sfingi, le donne alate e la testa collocata tra queste ultime che presenta sulla sua sommit\u00e0 un ornamento a forma di conchiglia, tipico dello stile Rocaille<\/em>.<\/p> In stile Barocco<\/em> sono il baldacchino al di sopra della rocaille<\/em> e le mensole su cui poggiano le sfingi: infatti sono ripresi dall\u2019architettura barocca le loro volute, le linee curve e la struttura elaborata.<\/p> Non solo, anche il Rococ\u00f2<\/em> \u00e8 presente, negli elementi naturalistici quali l\u2019opulenta composizione di fiori nella coppa e le ghirlande.<\/p> Abbiamo scelto questo motivo per alcuni dei nostri tessuti: velluto soprarizzo, velluto multicolore<\/a>, damasco<\/a> e broccatello<\/a>.<\/p> Nel velluto soprarizzo Grottesche<\/a>, la grande ricchezza di forme e dettagli \u00e8 realizzata con un telaio manuale per quello che \u00e8 il pi\u00f9 complesso e prezioso dei nostri velluti.
