A triumph of the oddest patterns, which only the most skillful weavers could create and which had a short period of great fortune throughout Europe. Let\u2019s find out why.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Features of Bizarre Silks<\/h2>\n<p>Bizarre silks owe their name to the oddness of this motif: the figures that decorate it aren\u2019t a mere stylized version of natural or animal elements but an interpretation of them, sometimes so free as to make the subjects unrecognizable. They were mostly brocaded silk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luigi-bevilacqua.com\/en\/lampases\/\">lampas<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luigi-bevilacqua.com\/en\/damasks\/\">damasks<\/a> that are among the most complex <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luigi-bevilacqua.com\/en\/luxury-fabrics\/\">kinds of precious fabrics<\/a> to produce. The creation of such rich patterns required extraordinary skill on the part of weavers, helped by designers specialized in this style. It\u2019s believed that it was the technical skills achieved in that historical period that made the birth of these fabrics possible.<\/p>\n<p>In Venice, a city with strong ties to the Orient, the exotic and fantastic designs of the bizarre became popular through the <em>ganzi<\/em>, the precious silk fabrics that the Serenissima produced and exported since the 17th century to both the West and the East. They were usually lampas, characterized by elaborate designs that the brightness of gold and silver yarns helped stand out against the ground.<\/p>\n<p>The high technical skill of the weavers necessary to create the bizarre fabrics together with the abundant use of precious yarns made these fabrics exclusive to churches, palaces and the clothes of the nobles.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Origins of the Bizarre Pattern<\/h2>\n<p>Bizarre designs were in vogue between about 1695 and 1720, spreading to France, Italy and Spain. It\u2019s not clear, however, in which country they originated. Certainly, the East India Companies\u2019 trade gave a great contribution to their birth and diffusion.<\/p>\n<p>In those years, in fact, the various European companies started importing large quantities of porcelain, fabrics, and other artifacts from the Middle and the Far East. Un trionfo di fantasie a briglia sciolta, che solo i pi\u00f9 abili tessitori potevano realizzare e che ebbe un breve periodo di grande fortuna in tutta Europa. Scopriamo perch\u00e9.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h2>Cosa sono i tessuti bizarre<\/h2><p>I tessuti bizarre devono il loro nome alla stravaganza di questo motivo: le figure che lo decorano non sono una versione stilizzata di elementi naturali o animali ma una loro interpretazione, a volte talmente libera da rendere irriconoscibili i soggetti. Si trattava per lo pi\u00f9 di <a href=\"http:\/\/www.luigi-bevilacqua.com\/lampassi\/\">lampassi<\/a> e <a href=\"http:\/\/www.luigi-bevilacqua.com\/damaschi\/\">damaschi<\/a> di seta broccati, tra i pi\u00f9 complessi <a href=\"http:\/\/www.luigi-bevilacqua.com\/tessuti-pregiati\/\">tipi di tessuti pregiati<\/a> da realizzare. Ma era soprattutto la creazione dei disegni, cos\u00ec particolari e ricchi di dettagli, che richiedeva una straordinaria perizia da parte dei tessitori, affiancati da disegnatori specializzati in questo stile. Si ritiene infatti che proprio le capacit\u00e0 tecniche raggiunte in quel periodo storico abbiano reso possibile la nascita di questi tessuti.<\/p><p>A Venezia, citt\u00e0 dai forti legami con l\u2019Oriente, i disegni esotici e fantastici dei bizarre si imposero attraverso i <em>ganzi<\/em>, i preziosi tessuti di seta che la Serenissima produceva ed esportava gi\u00e0 nel \u2018600 sia in Occidente che in Oriente. Solitamente erano lampassi, caratterizzati da elaborati disegni che la luminosit\u00e0 di filati in oro e argento facevano risaltare al massimo.<\/p><p>La grande abilit\u00e0 tecnica dei tessitori necessaria per creare i tessuti bizarre insieme al copioso uso di filati preziosi, rendevano quindi queste stoffe un\u2019esclusiva di chiese, palazzi e abiti delle classi pi\u00f9 agiate.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h2>Le origini del disegno bizarre<\/h2><p>I disegni bizarre sono stati in voga tra il 1695 e il 1720 circa, diffondendosi in Francia, Italia e Spagna. Non \u00e8 chiaro tuttavia in quale Paese abbiano avuto origine. Certamente un grande contributo alla loro nascita e diffusione venne dai commerci della Compagnia delle Indie.<\/p><p>In quegli anni, infatti, le varie Compagnie europee cominciarono a importare grandi quantit\u00e0 di porcellane, tessuti e altri manufatti dal Medio ed Estremo Oriente.
