In 2004, Palazzo Ducale in Venice hosted an exhibition dedicated to our fabrics, under the title “The Spirit of Tradition. Eight Centuries of Venetian velvets at the Tessitura Bevilacqua”. On display, in addition to antique fabrics, there was also an original 18th-century loom, still in working order.<\/p>\n

Our Venetian Velvets on Display<\/h2>\n

A catalogue edited by Doretta Davanzo Poli, art historian and professor of textile history at the University of Venice, has captured the essence of the exhibition. The title “The Spirit of Tradition”, traces a path through the history of Tessitura Bevilacqua<\/a>. It tells not only what the eighty fabrics exhibited in 2004 – all of them belonging to Tessitura Bevilacqua’s Historical Archive – represent, but also what the role of velvets in Venice is.<\/p>\n

The Charm of an Antique Loom<\/h2>\n
A jacquard loom was also set up in the Sala del Piovego<\/a>. Disassembled in our historic headquarters on the Grand Canal, it was then carefully rebuilt, piece by piece, right in the center of the room, to stress its importance. It’s a majestic machine that became the focus of the exhibition. But just as a musical organ remains mute without an organist, so too this complex and sophisticated device comes to life thanks to the weavers.\u00a0 Mariella, who has worked with us for 50 years, wove the Piovego soprarizzo velvet<\/a> during the exhibition. She created an amazing dance, made of precise, rhythmic, repetitive movements, full of vigor and grace at the same time.<\/p>\n
The Weaving of a Soprarizzo Velvet<\/h2>\n
A fascinating video, shot during the event, shows us the massive loom with the weft ground threads lying horizontally. They meet with the “pile” warp threads which start from hundreds of spools placed on the bobbin rack (cantra<\/em>) below, held in tension by small weights. An exceptional helper, our technical director Emanuele Bevilacqua, checks the progress of the perforated cards of the Jacquard machine<\/a>, placed on top of the loom. They allow the automatic movement of the individual warp threads and therefore the creation of the elaborate velvet’s designs.<\/p>\n
Mariella operates the treadles to raise and lower the warp threads creating the shed to pass the weft through, forming the weave of the fabric. Like her assistant Ilaria, she inserts special rods to obtain both cut and curly hair. The former have a square section, with a groove along which Mariella quickly slides a blade to cut the pile, while the latter have a round section and are only removed. Then, with a sharp blow of the beater, Mariella pushes the last weft firmly against the already woven piece.<\/p>\n
These are the steps that have been repeated for centuries to transform endless wefts of iridescent silk threads into magnificent velvets, true works of art whose production costs are very high because in a day’s work only a few tens of centimeters of velvet are made, and the mere setting up of the thousands of threads requires from one to several months of work. Un catalogo a cura di Doretta Davanzo Poli, storica dell\u2019arte e docente di storia del tessuto all\u2019Universit\u00e0 di Venezia, ha racchiuso l\u2019essenza della mostra. \u201cIl genio della tradizione\u201d, questo il titolo, ripercorre la storia della Tessitura Bevilacqua<\/a> raccontando non solo cosa rappresentano gli ottanta tessuti esposti nel 2004 \u2013 tutti parte dell\u2019Archivio Storico Tessitura Bevilacqua -, ma anche qual \u00e8 il ruolo dei velluti a Venezia.

Il fascino di un telaio antico<\/h2>
Nella Sala del Piovego<\/a> \u00e8 stato allestito anche un telaio jacquard. Smontato nella nostra sede storica sul Canal Grande, \u00e8 stato poi ricostruito con cura, pezzo dopo pezzo, proprio al centro della sala, per sottolinearne l\u2019importanza. Un maestoso strumento che \u00e8 diventato il fulcro della mostra. Ma come un organo musicale, per quanto bello e imponente, resta muto senza un organista, cos\u00ec anche questa macchina complessa e sofisticata, prende vita solo grazie alle tessitrici. \u00a0E cos\u00ec Mariella, che ha lavorato con noi per 50 anni, ha tessuto il velluto soprarizzo Piovego<\/a> durante la mostra, dando vita ad una danza emozionante, fatta di movimenti precisi, ritmici, ripetitivi, pieni di vigore e allo stesso tempo di grazia.<\/p>
La tessitura di un velluto soprarizzo<\/h2>
Un affascinante video, girato durante l'evento, ci mostra il grande telaio con i fili dell\u2019ordito di fondo stesi orizzontalmente. Questi, si incontrano con i fili dell\u2019ordito \u201cdi pelo\u201d che partono da centinaia di rocchetti sistemati sulla rastrelliera (cantra<\/em>) sottostante, tenuti in tensione da piccoli pesi. Un aiutante d'eccezione, il nostro direttore tecnico Emanuele Bevilacqua, controlla l\u2019avanzamento delle schede perforate della macchina Jacquard<\/a>, posta in cima al telaio. Queste permettono il movimento automatico dei singoli fili di ordito e quindi la creazione degli elaborati disegni del velluto.<\/p>
Mariella aziona i pedali per alzare e abbassare i fili degli orditi e poter passare la trama, formando l\u2019intreccio del tessuto. Come l'assistente Ilaria, inserisce degli speciali ferri per ottenere pelo tagliato e pelo riccio. A sezione quadrata i primi, dotati di una scanalatura lungo la quale Mariella fa scorrere velocemente una lama per tagliare il pelo, mentre i secondi hanno sezione rotonda e vengono solamente sfilati. Poi, con un colpo deciso della cassa battente, Mariella serra la trama.<\/p>
Questi sono i gesti che si ripetono da secoli per trasformare infinite trame di fili di seta cangiante in magnifici velluti, vere e proprie opere d\u2019arte la cui produzione ha costi molto elevati poich\u00e9 in una giornata di lavoro vengono realizzate poche decine di centimetri di tessuto e la sola messa in opera delle migliaia di fili richiede da uno a pi\u00f9 mesi di lavoro. Il video che segue vi far\u00e0 rivivere quest\u2019esperienza unica e magica.<\/p>
