What were the decorative motifs<\/strong> that characterised the fabrics <\/strong>used in the Renaissance<\/strong>? The textile scraps that have survived till our time are unfortunately few, but paintings and our Historical Archive, which contains more than 3,000 designs used for furnishing and clothing fabrics, some of which refer to that historical period, come to our aid.<\/p>\n Between approximately 1400 and 1600, the wealthier classes used to commission the production of fabrics with motifs which had been popular during the previous centuries, but the choice widened with the introduction of new designs. Moreover, Italian Renaissance fabrics<\/strong> were enriched by gold and silver threads in the wefts. Their opulence was highlighted by increasingly wide motifs that only at the end of the 16th century shrank when applied to clothing fabrics, thus leading to a differentiation from furnishing fabrics that until then didn\u2019t exist.\u00a0<\/p>\n The most popular motif in the Renaissance was the so-called “pomegranate<\/strong>“, a pattern that also included pine cones and thistle or lotus flowers. Persians considered pomegranate a symbol of fertility and immortality, and this meaning spread to the West. During this period it was favoured among ladies, too, who associated it with an image of renown and wealth<\/strong>. Indeed, you can see it in all its splendour on Eleanor of Toledo\u2019s dress, as portrayed by the Bronzino (around 1545). Here the pomegranate has another meaning, too: it\u2019s one of the symbols of the Spanish court, from which Cosimo I de\u2019 Medici\u2019s wife came. Heraldic symbols<\/strong> also characterized the toga of the Senators of the Serenissima: the crown (indicating high rank) and the stylized rose with a button in the centre (representing honour and nobility), as you can see in the portrait of a Venetian Senator by Domenico Tintoretto (1560-1635). Like the Sagredo pattern<\/strong>, characterised by very large designs and natural elements such as leaves, flowers and birds. Or another decorative motif that recalls leaves and lotus flowers, called Rinascimento <\/strong>and present in our catalogue as soprarizzo velvet<\/a> (handmade), heddle velvet<\/a> and brocatelle<\/a>. La loro opulenza viene evidenziata da motivi sempre pi\u00f9 ampi che solo verso la fine del \u2018500 si rimpiccioliscono nei tessuti d\u2019abbigliamento, portando cos\u00ec ad una differenziazione dai tessuti per arredo che fino ad allora non esisteva. \u00a0Vediamo insieme i motivi ornamentali pi\u00f9 utilizzati per i tessuti rinascimentali<\/strong>, facendoci aiutare da dipinti e da disegni del nostro Archivio storico.<\/p> Il motivo di maggior successo nel Rinascimento fu quello \u201ca melograno<\/strong>\u201d, fantasia che comprendeva anche pigne e fiori di cardo o di loto. Per i Persiani il melograno era un simbolo di fertilit\u00e0 e immortalit\u00e0, e questo significato si diffuse anche in Occidente proprio in questo periodo. Era un motivo molto in voga tra le dame dell\u2019epoca, perch\u00e9 associato con un\u2019immagine di prestigio e ricchezza<\/strong>. E infatti lo potete ammirare in tutto il suo splendore sull\u2019abito di Eleonora di Toledo, ritratta dal Bronzino (1545 ca.), dove il melograno ha anche un altro significato: \u00e8 uno dei simboli della corte spagnola, dalla quale proveniva la moglie di Cosimo I de\u2019 Medici. Simboli araldici<\/strong> caratterizzavano anche la toga dei Senatori della Serenissima: la corona (che indicava il rango elevato) e la rosa stilizzata con un bottone al centro (che rappresentava l\u2019onore e la nobilt\u00e0), come si pu\u00f2 vedere nel ritratto di un Senatore Veneziano di Domenico Tintoretto (1560-1635). Come il motivo Sagredo<\/strong>, caratterizzato da disegni molto grandi ed elementi naturali come foglie, fiori ed uccelli. O Rinascimento<\/strong>, motivo decorativo che richiama foglie e fiori di loto, presente nel nostro catalogo come velluto soprarizzo<\/a> (realizzato a mano), velluto bacchetta<\/a> e broccatello<\/a>.
