If you\u2019ve ever been on Saint Mark\u2019s Square you simply can\u2019t have missed: from April to October, there\u2019s an orchestra busy entertaining its guests just outside its doors. That\u2019s it, we\u2019re talking about Grancaff\u00e8 and Restaurant Quadri, under the Procuratie Vecchie since 1775 and recently restored, though keeping its historical interiors untouched. Our Tessitura, too, has taken part in this restoration, providing one of its upholstery fabrics.<\/p>\n

The history of Venice\u2019s Caff\u00e8 Quadri<\/h2>\n

As a matter of fact, the history of the Quadri began more than a century earlier, in 1638, when it was still called Il Rimedio (\u201cThe Remedy\u201d). Indeed, it was a shop that sold Malvasia, a wine considered as a good remedy to give a boost to your body and soul.<\/p>\n

But it got its present name – and use – only in 1775, when the Venetian merchant Giorgio Quadri decided to buy this shop to turn it into a place where people could find the \u201chot black water<\/strong>\u201d. Coffee, in a word.<\/p>\n

In 1830 the restaurant on the first floor was opened and, in 2011, cafe and restaurant were both acquired by the brothers Massimiliano and Raffaele Alajmo, who\u2019ve maintained its historic style and kept up the cuisine\u2019s quality. They\u2019re both luxury places, whose uniqueness is indeed related to the breathtaking location – you can see the wonderful Saint Mark\u2019s Square from every window -, as well as to their service and food.<\/p>\n

So Grancaff\u00e8 Quadri<\/a> is now one of the most exclusive lounges in Venice. And, to celebrate this connection to the city, it\u2019s been renewed with the help of Venetian artisans<\/strong> to bring the 18th-century building back to its splendor.<\/p>\n

Bevilacqua\u2019s high quality upholstery fabric used for the renewal<\/h2>\n

From October 2017 to February 2018 Grancaff\u00e8 Quadri has undergone a major renewal, projected by architect Marino Folin and the French designer and architect Philippe Starck. The novelties are quite a few: from the \u201cQuadri\u201d sign that catches everyone\u2019s eye on the external wall, whose golden characters are now brighter than ever, to the pillars\u2019 capitals, showing poets and musicians from whom chef Massimiliano Alajmo draws his inspiration.<\/p>\n

But Restaurant Quadri has been thoroughly revamped, too: its walls, previously covered in a red fabric, are now decorated with one of our brocatelles. The original pattern<\/strong> comes from our Grottesche brocatelle<\/a>, but Philippe Starck has transformed it completely. Instead of the Gorgons\u2019 heads it shows the faces of the Alajmo brothers, whereas the winged figures that flanked them have turned into astronauts bearing a rifle.<\/p>\n

The cafe\u2019s historical style is therefore still there, though with an extra unconventional and ironic touch that underlines the innovative spirit of Quadri\u2019s cuisine, that keeps on respecting traditions, anyway.<\/span><\/p>\n
